1. Steering Committee Report

The report was taken on a general aye.

2. Motions

2.1 Name of Kingsgate Bar

Amendment 1 Proposed: Auger Pearce (Hatfield), Seconded: Jo Cook (Hatfield)

Delete existing sections 'DSU Believes' and 'DSU Resolves' and insert the following:

DSU Further Notes

That many Durham students would like to have gone to Oxbridge

DSU Believes

1. That they are misguided in this and Durham is actually a much better place to be; but nevertheless,

2. That the Union should endeavour to give its members what they want, and should therefore enable them to go to Oxbridge when they feel like it.

DSU Resolves

That the bar formerly known as Kingsgate be renamed 'The Oxbridge Bar'.

AP: This is the best of a bad lot

S Godsave: I hate it, I never wanted to go there and 2 months down the line its going to sound really stupid.

C Neville-Smith: Wasn't this submitted before the short list on the agenda was drawn up and failed to make the short-list ?

AP: I draw your attention to DSU believes 1 and 2. It has longevity, I leave it up to you to decide whether it is silly or not.

Amendment defeated by 21 votes to 2.

[The following amendments were all of the form: 'Delete DSU Resolves (1) and insert DSU Resolves (1) "To name the bar on Level B of Dunelm House: X"' - Steering]

JW: Vote for it because its good.

A. Proctor: No its not.

Amendment defeated by 18 votes to 5.

3. "The Polar Bar" Proposed: Alan Proctor Seconded: E Moody (Aidan's)

A Proctor: There will be easy marketing for this one with furry animals and beer glasses.

SG: There would be better marketing with "The Farmer's Arse" [Also on the short list] and beer glasses

Amendment Overwhelmingly defeated

4. "The Waterfront" Proposed: Alistar Keir (Aidan's) Seconded: Jon Tyerman (Aidan's)

AK: Its the best of a bad lot

SV: It sounds like the name of a bar in a really crap golf club

Amendment defeated by 15 votes to 5 (2 abstentions)

5. "TBFKAK" [As in "The Bar Formerly Known As Kingsgate"] Proposed: Simon Godsave (Hild/Bede) Seconded: Andrew Cheung (Mildert)

A Proctor: This is sensible and there's plenty of marketing potential

?: There's as much marketing potential as with "Kingsgate"

?: There's nothing special about "The Meander Bar", after all we're trying to solve Kingsgates's image problem

SG: Isn't a meander where a river isn't going anywhere fast ?

CNS: Its going to look pathetic if we don't change the name after all the publicity we've had appealing for ideas.

Amendment overwhelmingly defeated.

9. "The Bridge House" Proposed: Ben Wiles (Grey) Seconded: Dan Moxey (Grey)

BW: There's a bridge nearby and I thought it would be original.

Amendment defeated by 11 votes to 4.

10. "The Cap and Phone" Proposed: Brian Ahearne (Hatfield) Seconded: E. Moody (Aidan's)

?: "The what and what??" is what everyone will say.

Amendment defeated by 14 votes to 1.

11. "The Homeless Bird Bar" Proposed Ben Hall (Grey) Seconded: Dan Moxey (Grey)

BH: There's a birds nest by the bar which I presume will be disturbed by the renovations and it would be a crying shame if we didn't adopt this name.

A. Proctor: Lets cry

Amendment defeated by 9 votes to 6

12. "Kingsgate" Proposed: Mike Gibbs (Hatfield) Seconded: Gareth Wilson (Hatfield)

MG: Lets just keep it the way it is.

?: Doesn't that defeat the object of this meeting ?

TN: People cringe at the name "DSU" but "The Union" sounds cool.

?: Its a crap name for a bar anyway

Amendment defeated by 14 votes to 6
